Breaking theBarriers

DEI Aligned Disability Management & Return-to-Work Solutions for High-Performing Workplaces

30 October 202608:30 - 16:30The Garden Venue Hotel

All business leaders have dealt with the question of whether someone can return to their job after a period of temporary incapacity, and clinicians alike have pushed the agenda of accommodation. Yet there is also a legal question, a commercial question and an ethical question, and each needs to be heard before a decision is made. This workshop brings all of those perspectives into one room.

The starting point

One decision, every discipline behind it

Every return-to-work case ends in a workplace decision. The best ones are commercially viable and ethically made.

Clinical capacity, mental health, job demands, accommodation, legal obligation, insurance, cost and long-term workforce capability all shape that decision. Clinicians, legal advisers, insurers and HR each hold part of the answer, and their work is at its best when it supports one clear decision rather than competing with it.

Breaking the Barriers teaches every discipline in the room how its expertise feeds one outcome: a good, commercially viable workplace decision made with care for the person at the centre of it. After the shared plenary, specialised breakaways take each discipline deeper into its own part of that work.

Interdisciplinary workshop incorporating practical skill-building activities, case-based learning and actionable RTW strategies

Why attend

You have seen every one of these cases

Organisations are increasingly required to navigate complex cases where the clinically right answer, the legally safe answer and the operationally possible answer are three different answers. This workshop shows how to turn them into one decision the business can stand behind.

01

Clinically ready, operationally not

An employee is clinically ready to return, but cannot immediately meet all job demands.

02

Accommodation versus operations

Reasonable accommodation needs to be balanced against operational requirements.

03

Health barriers to participation

Mental health and physical health barriers affect sustainable work participation.

04

The cost of prolonged absence

Prolonged absence creates significant financial and productivity costs.

05

Clinic and workplace out of step

Healthcare recommendations do not always align with workplace realities.

06

Decisions that must hold up

Employers need to make fair, legally defensible and commercially sustainable decisions.

07

Experience walking out the door

Experienced employees may be at risk of unnecessary turnover following injury or illness.

Each of these cases can end in a decision that is commercially viable, legally sound and ethically made, with clinical, legal and insurance expertise supporting it rather than pulling against it.

See how the day is built

What you will explore

One day, six sessions, five disciplines in the room

The morning builds the shared strategic, clinical, commercial and legal picture. The afternoon splits into specialised breakaways by discipline, then brings everyone back together.

Morning plenary

All delegates together

01Keynote

Fair, Legal, Practical: When the Right Workplace Decision Isn't Obvious

An opening session exploring the grey areas where clinical recommendations, employee needs, workplace realities, legal obligations and fairness intersect. It sets the foundation for interdisciplinary decision-making by examining how clinicians and workplace stakeholders can navigate complex cases when the clinically appropriate, legally compliant and operationally practical options do not fully align.

02Session two

From Capacity to Capability: Effective Cognitive, Physical & Psychosocial RTW Strategies

Explore how residual cognitive, physical and psychosocial capacity can be translated into practical, job-specific RTW strategies through functional assessment, job-demand analysis, graded RTW, accommodation and monitoring.

03Session three

The Business Case for Return to Work: Cost-Effective & Commercially Viable Solutions

Ensuring interdisciplinary stakeholders have a common understanding of the financial and operational implications of prolonged absence. Exploring commercially viable accommodation and rehabilitation investment. Examining RTW return on investment to weigh the case for retention against the cost of replacement.

04Session four

The Legally Resilient Workplace: Legal & Regulatory Compliance in Disability Management

The session considers the legal and regulatory principles relevant to disability management, return-to-work planning and reasonable accommodation, with particular attention to how these requirements intersect with clinical recommendations, functional capacity, workplace demands and employer responsibilities. The discussion highlights key considerations for making ethically sound, procedurally fair and defensible decisions.

05Panel discussion

When Return to Work is Clinically Possible but Operationally Difficult: Where Does Reasonable Accommodation End?

An interdisciplinary panel explores the difficult intersection between clinical readiness, workplace requirements, reasonable accommodation, operational realities, performance, legal obligations and organisational sustainability.

Practical breakaway sessions

After the morning discussions, each discipline moves into its own specialised breakaway.

Closing plenary

Everyone back in one room

06Closing plenary

Connecting the Dots: Return to Work as a Talent Retention Strategy

The workshop concludes by positioning RTW as a strategic workforce tool that can help organisations retain experienced employees, protect institutional knowledge, reduce unnecessary turnover and maintain workforce capability. The closing discussion asks how effective RTW can become a strategic tool for retaining talent, protecting organisational capability and supporting long-term business performance.

Practical breakaway sessions

Specialised breakaways for each discipline

After the shared plenary, each discipline goes deeper into its own part of the decision. Pick your breakaway when you book so we can size the rooms and prepare the right case material.

Return to work sits at the intersection of people, performance, health, law and business.

The question is no longer simply

Is this employee fit to return to work?

The more important questions are

  • What can the employee do?
  • What does the workplace require?
  • What support or accommodation is appropriate?
  • What is legally and operationally sustainable?
  • How can the organisation retain valuable talent while maintaining performance?

Breaking the Barriers brings these questions together so every discipline in the room works towards the same end: a good, commercially viable workplace decision, made with human ethics in mind.

Speakers

Clinical, claims, HR and legal voices in one room

The same interdisciplinary mix the workshop is built on. Colours match the breakaway each perspective speaks to most: green for clinical and rehabilitation, rose for employer, HR and claims.

Questions

Everything delegates usually ask

How many CPD points does the workshop carry?
The programme provides 7 CPD points across strategic disability management, cognitive, physical and psychosocial RTW strategies, commercial RTW decision-making, legal and regulatory considerations, an interdisciplinary panel discussion and practical application through the specialist breakaway sessions. Accreditation details, including the accrediting body and accreditation number, are being finalised and will be confirmed to all registered delegates before the event.
Do I have to choose a breakaway track when I book?
Yes, and it takes one click. After the morning plenary sessions you join either the Clinical & Rehabilitation track or the Employer, HR & Claims track. Choosing when you book lets us size the rooms and prepare the right case material. If you change your mind, email admin@promotebalance.co.za up to five working days before the event and we will move you.
When does the early bird price end?
Early bird registration at R1,800 is open until 18 September 2026. From 19 September the standard rate of R2,200 applies. The price shown at checkout is always the live rate, so what you see is what you pay.
Can I book for several colleagues at once?
Yes. You can book up to six delegates in a single checkout. Enter each person's details so their CPD certificate, breakaway track and dietary requirements are recorded correctly, then pay once for the whole group. For larger groups, contact us at admin@promotebalance.co.za and we will arrange it directly.
Can my organisation pay by EFT against an invoice?
Yes. Choose "Request an invoice" at checkout instead of paying by card. Capture the delegate details and any purchase order reference, and our team will issue a tax invoice with banking details within one business day. Your seats are provisionally held while the invoice is settled.
What are my accessibility options at the venue?
This is a workshop about removing barriers, so we take our own seriously. The Garden Venue Hotel has step-free access and accessible facilities, and the booking form has a field for any access, mobility, sensory, dietary or other accommodation you need. Tell us there and our team will make the arrangements and confirm them with you before the day.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations received in writing more than 14 days before the event receive a full refund. Within 14 days the booking is non-refundable, but you may transfer the seat to a colleague at no charge by emailing admin@promotebalance.co.za with the replacement delegate details.
Will photographs be taken at the workshop?
Yes. A photographer captures the day, and we may use some images afterwards on our website, social media and marketing. Appearing in them is your choice: each delegate has an optional photo consent box on the booking form, and it is never a condition of booking. If you do not tick it, we will not publish photographs in which you can be identified, and you can withdraw your consent at any time by emailing admin@promotebalance.co.za.
Who will be speaking?
Our confirmed speakers bring business, HR, legal, clinical and claims perspectives: Shailendra R Senzere (Promote Balance), Mangla Haripersad (Iser t/a Expert South Africa), Kabelo Monageng, Michelle Hermse and Leeat Blatt (Liberty Group). Their full profiles are in the Speakers section of this page.
